چکیده

Model-based sound synthesis generally focuses on providing tools for simulation of the sound production mechanisms in musical instruments for real-time sound synthesis. More recently, the same tools are being used for simulation of bioacoustical systems. The sound production anatomy and neurophysiology of animals are important subtopics in the study of sound in non-human animals. Although the musical potential of animal sounds has been recognized for a long time, the traditional means of musical usage of such sounds were quite limited. For instance, the animals sounds have been imitated by conventional instruments (such as piccolo imitation of bird songs), or more recently, by samplers. This paper documents the design of a virtual instrument that produces dolphin clicks. The design was motivated by a composition by Shinji Kanki for the Helsinki Computer Orchestra. The instrument is based on a simplified sound-source model derived from the acoustics of catacean clicks. It runs in real-time in CsoundAV, and can be controlled via a GUI. Besides their musical usage, such tools can be used in emerging subfields of musicology, e.g., zoömusicology. A distilled version of this paper will be submitted to Nordic Musicological Congress 2004. The designed instrument will be demonstrated during the presentation.

Bioacoustic Modeling for Sound Synthesis: a Case Study of Odontoceti Clicks

This paper documents the design of a computer instrument that is based on a simplified bioacoustic model of odontoceti clicks. The components of the basic model are described, and its implementation is carried out by using simple filters. By imposing restrictions, this model has been converted to a real-time computer instrument. Related material and sound examples are available online at http:/...

An Ensemble Click Model for Web Document Ranking

Annually, web search engine providers spend more and more money on documents ranking in search engines result pages (SERP). Click models provide advantageous information for ranking documents in SERPs through modeling interactions among users and search engines. Here, three modules are employed to create a hybrid click model; the first module is a PGM-based click model, the second module in a d...

Discovering Popular Clicks\' Pattern of Teen Users for Query Recommendation

Search engines are still the most important gates for information search in internet. In this regard, providing the best response in the shortest time possible to the user's request is still desired. Normally, search engines are designed for adults and few policies have been employed considering teen users. Teen users are more biased in clicking the results list than are adult users. This leads...

A Musical Instrument Based on a Bioacoustic Model of a Cicada

In this research, the sound production mechanism of the cicada is explored and modeled to create a new digital musical instrument. The model is implemented in an environment which offers intuitive, real-time manipulation of the model’s parameters – making it suitable for live, interactive, musical performances. The model consists of a primary and secondary resonator, the former for the tymbal a...

Functional morphology of the nasal complex in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena l.).

Toothed whales (Odontoceti, Cetacea) are the only aquatic mammals known to echolocate, and probably all of them are able to produce click sounds and to synthesize their echoes into a three-dimensional "acoustic image" of their environment. In contrast to other mammals, toothed whales generate their vocalizations (i.e., echolocation clicks) by a pneumatically-driven process in their nasal comple...
